Billionaire Online Casino Owner Offers One Billion Dollars for Peace

14 Dec 2006

Avi Shaked, billionaire businessman and owner of one of the biggest online casino sites on the net, is already tired of the Middle East conflict. In a recent interview with Reuters, the Israeli online casino tycoon said that he has offered the Palestinian prime minister one billion dollars if he, and his Israeli counterpart, would sit down together and reach a peace agreement. According to Shaked, many international financiers are ready to give out the money the moment a deal will be signed. In addition, an initial sum of 100 millions dollars would be given to the Palestinians if Ismail Haniye, leader of the Hamas, would sit down and talk with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Shaked, who founded the online casino site some years ago, said: “I can’t take all those killings anymore. My initiative is to both sides, just sit down and talk”. According to him, he even has the support of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Besides owning an online casino and being an hi tech entrepreneur, Shaked is a supporter of Israel’s centre-left Labour party, and he has launched in the past several peace initiatives.

The logic behind the online casino’s owner proposal is that such an amount of money could bring the Palestinian economy closer to Israel’s standards, leveling the two countries and doing away with the poverty that only makes the conflict hardest to resolve. News agencies around the world have reported that Haniye has rejected the offer, but Shaked says that he understood that both parties are still considering the offer. The chances are probably low, but even if something comes out of this, the whole world should thank the billionaire online casino owner.
